What Pioneers Need to Know

We are just one step away from the v20 version.

Pi Network’s core team brought to X at the end of the business week to announce the latest blockchain update that was successfully migrated. Protocol v19.6 has been implemented, and version 19.9 will be the next and only one remaining before the long-awaited v20.

The announcement urged nodes to confirm that they have upgraded to be compliant with the new version.

Node, update is here

Recall that the team first outlined a series of upcoming upgrades last week, saying that Pi nodes must complete the migration by February 15th to remain connected to the network after implementation.

In an explanatory post specific to Node, the team describes Node as a “fourth role within the Pi ecosystem,” which requires it to run on a laptop or desktop computer rather than a mobile device. Like nodes in other blockchains, they must maintain a distributed ledger by validating transactions and reaching consensus on the order of transactions.

However, there are differences between nodes on the Pi Network and nodes that operate on proof-of-work systems such as Bitcoin. Pi employs a consensus mechanism derived from the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP), so that a trusted group of nodes, called a quorum slice, validate transactions only if their trusted peers agree.

It is worth noting that the security circles created by mobile miners form a global trust graph that helps determine which nodes can participate in verification.

Built with accessibility in mind

The core team also highlighted another difference between nodes on different blockchains and nodes operating within the Pi ecosystem. They explained that the whole concept of Pi Network is to operate under a user-centric design, where even non-technical pioneers can install the Pi Node desktop application and enable or disable participation in a node with a simple interface.

The team noted that this method is consistent with Pi’s “progressive decentralization” strategy, allowing the network to evolve toward full decentralization while remaining accessible to everyday users.
