SEI Giga is entering blockchain technology with innovative Autobahn consensus mechanisms. It utilizes a multiproposer architecture to significantly enhance network throughput. This approach illustrates a departure from traditional single propother systems such as Tendermint.

The challenges of traditional models

The Tendermint Consensus model, widely adopted in the Proof-of-Stake (POS) blockchain, follows a sequential process that involves suggesting, pre-voting, pre-committing and committing blocks. This single proposal design creates a bottleneck that requires the consensus process timeout and restart, especially if the proposer is offline or malicious. Additionally, tight coupling of data availability and consensus limits throughput as each step must be completed before moving on to the next step.

Autobahn’s multiproposal advantage

Autobahn, employed by Sei Giga, avoids these problems by allowing multiple validators to propose blocks at the same time. This multiproposer architecture provides 50x improvements over tendelint throughput while maintaining Byzantine fault tolerance. Decoupling of data availability from consensus is a key innovation that allows for continuous and parallel data dissemination.

In this model, the validator maintains individual “lanes” for proposing transactions, facilitating asynchronous execution and transaction orders without waiting for global consensus on each proposal. With the introduction of Availability Certification (POA), consensus can be carried out based on lightweight proofs rather than extensive data transfer, optimizing network efficiency.

Improved network efficiency

Autobahn Protocol regularly captures network snapshots and organizes proposals from all lanes into “cut” suggestions. Validators vote for these reductions, allowing a single consensus decision to order multiple proposals. This method reduces communication overhead and accelerates the consensus process to just 1.5 round trips compared to the tendelint three.

Decoupling benefits

Decoupling of data availability from consensus offers several advantages. Large-scale parallel data processing, reduced communication overhead, and increased censorship resistance. Multiple validators suggesting transactions prevent censorship and ensure that the transaction has multiple paths to inclusion. This structure also supports asynchronous data and execution pipelines, allowing complex transactions to be processed without hindering throughput.

SEI Giga’s Autobahn mechanism represents a significant advance in the blockchain consensus, providing a scalable solution that addresses the limitations of traditional POS.
