A man in his 30s has been charged with attempted murder after his business partner fell ill after a meeting at a cafe, according to reports. The case stems from a dispute over a failed cryptocurrency investment.
The defendant is accused of lacing his partner’s coffee with the pesticide methomyl during a meeting in November. The victim collapsed and was taken to the hospital, where he regained consciousness three days later.
The Seoul Eastern District Public Prosecutors Office opened the case and filed charges. According to local media, the dispute evolved from large losses related to a Bitcoin shared investment program in the cryptocurrency market that began in 2022.
According to the report, the loss amounted to approximately 1.17 billion won, but according to calculations by the parties, this amount includes both company funds and funds personally invested by the defendant.
Suspected poisoning
The suspect reportedly met his partner at a cafe and offered her a drink. After a few sips, my partner passed out. Emergency services were called. He was rushed to the hospital and treated for several days.
He later told reporters his life had been shaken. He was planning a wedding, but his partner’s illness hit the family hard.
Disputes over virtual currency investment funds
According to the report, the two ran an investment business within the cryptocurrency sector that handled pooled funds for Bitcoin betting. The exact business structure is not fully explained in public reports. It’s unclear whether outside investors were involved or whether the money was theirs alone.
This detail is important because it changes the way a loss is viewed, either as a personal failure or as a potential misconduct that affects others. Prosecutors are currently focusing on charges of poisoning and violations of the Pesticide Control Law.
Cryptocurrency trading disaster: human cost
Chosun and Asia Business Daily published quotes and timelines from investigators and victims. Reports have highlighted the human toll, including sleepless nights, hospital visits and ruined wedding plans. These details give the appearance of what might otherwise be read as an economic dispute.
trial date
A trial is scheduled for March 10 at the Seoul Eastern District Court. Prosecutors plan to present evidence linking the defendant to the pesticide and the drinks served that day.
If convicted, the defendants face severe penalties under the Pesticides Act, including imprisonment and fines.
