Github announces an enhanced cop operation activity report for administrators

GitHub has released a new, improved Copilot Activity report designed to help enterprise and organizational administrators improve user authentication and feature adoption. This update is intended to outperform the capabilities of legacy usage reports by providing more timely and comprehensive data insights.

Important extensions to activity reports

The updated report introduces several major improvements, including:

  • Authentication tracking: New field, last_authenticated_atallowing administrators to monitor the user the last time they authenticated with Copilot.
  • Reinforcement of surface details: last_surface_used The fields provide specific information about the IDE version and feature names used by github.com.
  • Improved data freshness: Unlike previous daily updates, new reports refresh every 30 minutes to ensure timely data availability.
  • Comprehensive coverage: This report includes all the Copilot features commonly available on a variety of platforms, including IDE, GitHub.com, CLI, and mobile devices.

Additional features and benefits

Beyond core enhancements, activity reports offer some additional benefits.

  • Better License Management: Administrators can effectively monitor the use of Copilot via authentication timestamps.
  • Adoption Insights: This report makes it easier to track Copilot adoption and usage patterns.
  • Timely data: Reports are updated at intervals of up to 30 minutes, providing insights for near-term times.
  • 90 Days Retention: Historical data is available in 90 days and allows for extended analysis.

Access and Migration Details

The new activity report can be accessed via CSV download on the github.com settings page for both corporate and organizational administrators. Specific access paths include:

  • Enterprise Admin: Enterprise → Policy → Copilot → Access
  • Organization Owner: Organization → Settings → Copilot → Access
  • Enterprise Team: Billing and Licenses → License → Seat Management

Github will end its migration on October 23, 2025 and will phase out its 90-day legacy usage report. Administrators are encouraged to adopt new activity reports to maintain uninterrupted access to usage insights.
