The Ethereum Protocol Fellowship completed its fifth cohort and culminated in EPF Day at Devcon in Bangkok. Its completion marked five months of immersive learning, research and contributions to the Ethereum Core ecosystem from a group of talented and committed fellows. Client developers and researchers welcomed new contributors, some of which worked long term.
Furthermore, the second iteration of the protocol research group was completed after two months of intensive learning on the core protocol.

what’s new
Each cohort will collect feedback and learn more about how to improve the experiences of both fellows and Ethereum development. EPF5 has resulted in several notable changes and a highly productive cohort.
I sorted out the first one before EPF5 Protocol Research Group It was run for 10 weeks leading to EPF5. Over these 10 weeks, students participated in a curriculum designed to educate them in all areas of the protocol. This led to smoother onboarding as many peers were ready for EPF with more knowledge and resources.
Another major change to EPF5 was an extended period from four to five months, giving fellows more months to refine the project and aimed for a larger scope.
Similar to previous cohorts, we hosted EPF Day in Devcon and closed the cohort. However, for EPF5, additional EPF dates were also held near the start of the cohort during ETHCC in Brussels. The event gave fellows the opportunity to meet each other, meet leaders and present projects they would work on through the cohort.
EPF5 Statistics
The application for the fifth cohort opened in May 2024. After reviewing over 300 applications, 20 participants were awarded an initial scholarship to participate in a fellowship working on the core R&D project. Due to the programme being open, an additional 25 participants participated with permission. After a five-month period and over 500 updates per week, we concluded our cohort with 30 active fellows on EPF Day in Bangkok.
EPF5 Project
Overall, the Fellows proposed and contributed 30 projects. There were mentors from a variety of clients and research teams, including Grandine, Prysm, Lighthouse, Besu, Nimbus, Nethermind, Geth, Teku, Rig, and Reth. These projects are not only valuable learning experiences, but also represent meaningful contributions to the Ethereum Core ecosystem. All program resources are EPF5 repositorythere is a large portion of the activities /Development update and suggestions /project. As an active part of Ethereum’s open research, all EPF projects and resources are free and open source.
Protocol Research Group continues
Protocol Research Group I’m back in 2025! It starts with a two-week intensive that converges existing resources in an updated format, followed by six weeks of additional new lectures from the core developer.
